The rapid, tense alternation between and overlapping of lengthy, melodic clarinet tones and spicily dissonant, suddenly occuring piano chords is very effective. An especially refined effect was presented by the solo clarinet as it created a far off accompaniment for itself through sympathetic vibration of the pianostrings. (Eberbacher Zeitung, 3/7/1991).
