I submitted my sonata for violoncello and pi-ano Opus 17, and my pieces for cello Opus 24; taking as my motto for them the words of Goethe: ‘Wenn Ihrs nicht fühlt, Ihr werdets nicht erjagen’ (this you must feel, for chasing it will not help you). I was awarded a prize for the last-named while the sonata was recom-mended to a publisher by the judges Niels W.
