Three Arias on text by Pietro Metastasio (ca. 1748) for soprano and string quartet or string orchestra
The arias presented here are the first three of a collection of a total of 12 arias, which can be found under the call number Mus. 3275-J-1 in the Saxon State Library. The text of the title page reads:
A SUA ALTEZZA REALE / MARIA ANTONIA DI BAUIERA / PRINCIPESSA REALE DI POLONIA / ELLETRICE DI SASSONIA / ARIE CON ISTROMENTI / di / Donna Maria Teresa Agnesi / Milanese.
The sheet music volume in landscape format contains 134 pages, each with 10 staves, the last three pages are blank. All other pages contain – with the exception of the 12th aria on pages 119-131, which has no viola part – two chordal parts of 5 lines each in this arrangement:
1st instrumental part (G clef)
2nd instrumental part (G clef)
3rd instrumental part (C clef as alto clef)
Vocal part (C clef as soprano clef)
4. instrumental part (F clef)
There are no more precise instrumental indications; however, due to the clef, the range and the treatment of the parts, it is obvious to assume a string quartet or string orchestra instrumentation.
