Fanny Hensel nee Mendelssohn composed altogether nine vocal trios, two with piano accompaniment and seven without. It can be assumed – referring to diary notes – that these vocal trios, just as the duos, were written for merry events and also for performances at house concerts – the “Sunday Music Performances”. All vocal trios are written for two female voices and tenor, often for particular persons, as can be retraced from diaries and letters. At a ‘merry event’ all of those that have come tagether sing, and if the genre is ofthat kind, it seems absolutely legitimate to adjust the distribution of the voices to the special occasion presupposing that the composition remains unchanged as such. In the following trio the performance by S, A 1, A 2 (T) as well as S 1,
S 2, A 2 (T) is possible without problems. Occasionally octavations can be advised, as experiencing in a female choir has shown. The octavation advices are always marked as alternative possibilities.
The punctuation marks were set according to the conventional rules.
Abschied
(Heinrich Heine)
Es treibt dich fort von Ort zu Ort,
Du weißt nicht mal warum;
Im Winde klingt ein sanftes Wort,
Du schaust verwundert um.
Die Liebe, die dahinten blieb,
Sie ruft dich sanft zurück.
0 komm zurück, ich hab dich lieb,
Du bist mein einzges Glück.
Doch weiter sonder Ruh noch Rast,
Du darfst nicht stille stehn;
Was du so sehr geliebet hast,
Sollst nie du wiedersehn.
