“Instead of sending a postcard to my friends when on my travels, I often write a short piece which is its musical quivalent. Such “picture postcard” pieces represent an aspect of the country visited and are intended to evoke colourfully the atmosphere of a scene or an event. The idea for this piece came not only from a holiday in Mexico but also from a Mexican Folk art exhibit in the Glasgow Museum of Modern Art. The music is an attempt to recall the street bands and processions at night which close the Day of the Dead fiesta. The violin and clarinet belong to different bands and play simultaneously but independently. Sometimes they are in synchronisation, whilst at others they are not.” Janet Beat
