“This feathered species which I love – how numerous they are!”
This is the introduction to Birdsongs, a cycle for polyglot singers to be sung by an unaccompanied
choir a cappella or soloists (SSA). Sparrows, magpies and larks sing poetry by Christian
Morgenstern, Jules Renard and others in Italian, German, French and English.
A haunting tale, anonymous poem in Shakespearian style, closes this cycle “winding out,
laughing”. The different vocal techniques from Sprechgesang to whisper and whistle are to be
followed as indicated in the score.
