About the work
The work Strings – Bow & Arrow, commissioned and dedicated to Keshet Eilon, was inspired by the brilliant, vibrant sound produced by this talented
group of virtuoso string-players.
The wild melodic contours, surprising dynamic fluctuations and extreme changes in texture, combine to create the Body of this work: in a perpetual
attacca, all are swept up as in a ritual-like dance, with the tone-colour of the Arabic drums marking the way as they lead into the Presto. The solo violin
floats above the rest, bringing to mind the dress of a dancer, swirling about her in a particularly fast whirl. The melodic basis originates in fragments of
Indian ragas which I embedded in my own rhythmic world.
