The surviving manuscript score of a septet fantasy for 2 flutes, piano and string quartet has been dated 1927. However, this is undoubtedly the work that was conceived as a fantasy for piano and orchestra in 1910 as part of the Paris Colonne concerts under the conductor Gabriel Piernés was premiered. The orchestral version has not been found yet.
Although it is purely formal in terms of a fantasy, ie a self-contained work without the usual sentence division, the classic four-movement movement is unmistakable: Modéré – Scherzo with Trio – Slow Part – Finale Vif. The extremely carefully and concentratedly crafted work is harmoniously varied and ranges from late romantic to impressionistic sounds to the limits of tonality.
