Music was particularly close to the heart of Duchess Anna Amalia of Weimar, who was so important to cultural history, and after handing over the reins of government to her son Carl August in 1775, she undertook to compose the music for the singspiel “Erwin und Elmire” by the young Weimar privy councillor Goethe herself in 1776.
