The oratorio was written in 1781 to a libretto by Pietro Metastasio. Metastasio had written the libretto in 1740. The oratorio was performed with Predieri in Holy Week 1740. This was during Lent. Conductor Dominik Beykirch Maria Jaell composed her 20-minute Concerto pour violoncelle (for cello and orchestra) in 1882. The composer dedicated it to Jules Delsart, one of the most famous French cellists of her time.
