Program: Nadia Boulanger: Three pieces for violoncello and piano Lili Boulanger: Trio for violin, violoncello and piano Mél Bonis: Quartet No. 1 for piano and strings Florentine Mulsant: Quintet for piano and strings, world premiere     From the event website: Through works for piano and strings, this concert pays tribute to four French women composers, past and present: Mel Bonis, Florentine Mulsant, and the Boulanger sisters. How many women, like Clara Schumann or Fanny Mendelssohn, had to see their careers as composers sacrificed to social conventions? Mel Bonis, whose real name was Melanie Bonis, knew this all too well, choosing a pseudonym so that her music could be judged as that of a man. A classmate of Debussy, she left behind a significant corpus of 300 works, including the expressive piano quartet n˚1. The two sisters Lili and Nadia Boulanger also showed an extraordinary disposition toward music from childhood. Although the younger Lili died young at 25, she had time to compose some 50 works, while the elder Nadia, in addition to composing her own works, taught nearly 1200 students, including Leonard Bernstein and Michel Legrand, to compose.
