Description
Once a musician asked me to write solo suites for violoncello, which he wanted to perform together with Bach‘s first three suites. I liked the idea. There
are 11 well-known suites: 6 Bach Suites, 3 Reger Suites and 2 of Britten. I told him I‘m writing the twelfth as a couple for Bach‘s first, my first. Originally I
did not want to write a 13th. But then I came up with the idea that if the première would happen on a Friday, the 13th, then I‘ll do that devilish brood. The
musician was enthusiastic and promised me that he will arrange this world première. This is how the Bach Suite II was born. Then the 3rd was already
programmed, for a cancellation it was too late.
Then I thought further on … With Bach, all suites are also reworked for viola and violin. So I had to do that too, because it was meant for interaction
with Bach works. So I composed as follows: Bach Suites I op. 107 cello, 107a viola /107b violin, II op. 108, 108a, 108b, III op. 111, 111a, 111b.
The works are built similar to the Bach Suites. They are based on folk dances: Allemande – the German dance, Courante – the French, Sarabande – the Spanish
and so on.
You can play either a set of Bach and a set of mine, or the whole suite of Bach and then the whole suite of mine.
