Die Niemandsrose – Drei Lieder nach Paul Celan“ was composed in 2011/2012 and first performed by the
devotioModerna Ensemble in the concert „Ah, Celan…”. The performance was part of the 2012 ’International
Week for New Music’ in Bucharest, a festival which had Surrealism as its core theme that year.
The Three Celan-Lieder have been primarily written for (bass-)baritone. However, they may also be
addressed to a low female voice since the poetic texts themselves do not indicate a male-specific lyrical
subject. In selecting these three poems I followed main ideas from Celan’s poetry, such as positive
and negative alienation, and the relationship between man and God. I have also included the particular
nuance to be found in his love poems – the obsessive morbidity exhaling from the dark depth of the
human psyche.
