Description

Text: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The „Erlkönig“ is one of Mayer‘s earliest settings of a text by Goethe. This edition is based on the unpublished manuscript from the Tappert Collection (ca. 1870), the so-called Erlkönig II from the Staatsbibliothek Berlin, Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Mus.Nachl. Tappert, W. V,10,44.

Emilie Mayer learned song composition from Carl Loewe in Stettin. She wrote only a few solo songs, possibly because of the rather negative association with female, domestic music. She wrote
three songs op. 7 and op. 10 as well as two further songs for voice and piano (no date given) and two children‘s songs, which were published posthumously in 1891.
