“Luise A. Le Beau recalls in her memoirs: “Some time ago […] an international competition for compositions for the cello was announced. I submitted my sonata for violoncello and pi-ano Opus 17, and my pieces for cello Opus 24; taking as my motto for them the words of Goethe: ‘Wenn Ihrs nicht fühlt, Ihr werdets nicht erjagen’ (this you must feel, for chasing it will not help you). I was awarded a prize for the last-named while the sonata was recom-mended to a publisher by the judges Niels W. Gade, Carl Reinecke and Bernath as an ‘addi-tion to literature worthy of publication’ and published.” “
