Hexagramm
Canzona for six orchestra segments (1994/95)
Hexagramm is a work for an orchestra split up in six sound groups. The piece is of moderate difficulty, so that it is particularly suitable for music school and amateur orchestras. An especially impressive effect can be produced, when the groups are positioned separately, in particular, when arranged in the geometrical form of a hexagramm.
The composition is based on the musical realization of a play of numbers using the figure 6. For example, not only six orchestra groups are required (necessitating the participation of at least 36 musicians). The 6-bar theme, too, deals with this number in a playful manner. Finally, the length of the entire piece is 106 bars.
The six orchestra segments correspond to the single voices of a fugue, whose charming character is based particularly on the resulting multiple harmonic layers. The combination of the harmonic and rhythmical counterpoints gives the work an even bitonal dimension. Full of variety, the piece is rounded out by soloist passages.
