In February 2012, the GEDOK (Association of Communities of Women Artists and Supporters of the Arts) Karlsruhe launched a project planned for several years with the aim of presenting the complete works of the Karlsruhe composer Margarete Schweikert to a broad public. In addition to the publication of playing scores, this will be done in concerts, through the release of CDs and essays on the composer’s life and work.
A large part of her work is already stored in the archives of the Badische Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe, while the smaller part is still in the composer’s private estate. As part of the GEDOK project, the entire compositional output will be brought together in the Badische Landesbibliothek.
The fewest compositions exist in print, the greater part has been handed down in manuscript. Depending on the work, the manuscript and one or even more copies exist. A particularly fortunate circumstance for the edition is the close cooperation between the editor and the composer’s daughter – Christiane Voigt. In numerous conversations, she provided a vivid picture of her mother and gave many valuable hints about the authenticity of the existing manuscripts.
Margarete Schweikert composed about 160 songs for one voice and piano. In addition, she created compositions for piano and organ, choral works, and some chamber music works for various instrumentations. Margarete Schweikert wrote most of her works between 1905 and 1923, and a few compositions after that time.
Regarding the title of the work Sonata for Violin and Viola: Since Margarete Schweikert uses the term viola for the viola, this is left in the title.
