The cello sonata op. 46, here arranged for viola and piano, was composed by Louise Farrenc in 1857. It was published by Edition Farrenc in 1861 and is one of the composer’s later works. In terms of style and form, Louise Farrenc orientates herself towards Viennese Classicism. However, there are also traces here of a “gentle romantic fragrance”, quite in keeping with German compositional tradition. Perhaps it is this delightful mixture of classical elegance and subtle Romanticism that leads one inescapably to succumb to the charm of this music.
