The folksongs of the British Isles represent one of
the most beautiful heritages of their kind. From
the witty Dashing away with the smoothing iron to
the melancholic setting of Shakespeare’s Willow
Song or the wickedly humorous Lovely Joan, they
reflect the rich variety of landscapes, colours and
rhythms of life in the British Isles.
They have been clad lightly for the present musical
climate, respecting the form in which I found or
heard them – but not without a twinkle in the eye.
