The project “Diabelli Recomposed: 50 Diabelli Waltz Variations by contemporary female composers worldwide” is the result of a very exciting three-year collaboration. Yesterday evening, on November 5, 2023, the 50-fold premiere of the “Diabelli Recomposed” project was performed and celebrated at the Staatstheater Braunschweig.
10 pianists from Prof. Ewa Kupiec’s class at the Hanover University of Music performed the works: We would like to thank Lioba Schmidt, Louisa Emilia Schneider, Oleksandra Kiktenko, Tsuzumi Namikawa, Harune Yoshida, Clara Strobel, Lal Karaalioglu, Greta Zamyckaja, Yue Chen and Zhu Zhuang, whose unique musical interpretations were enthusiastically received by the audience. The “Diabelli Recomposed” project was initiated by Claudia Bigos, a musicologist from Braunschweig. Her great commitment and visionary initiative laid the foundations for this impressive project.
The works of 50 female composers from all over the world, each of whom put Diabelli’s waltz variations in a new light in an original way, are all characterized by their diversity and uniqueness. It is an inspiring, exciting journey through the world of music, involving women from 22 nations and uniting several generations at the same time. Almost exactly 200 years after the first publication of Diabelli’s waltz variation, this concert and the sheet music edition completed the Diabelli Variations with an overdue contribution created exclusively by female composers.
We would like to thank Dagmar Schlingmann, artistic director of the Staatstheater Braunschweig, and the patrons for their support, which has helped to make “Diabelli Recomposed” a musical highlight.
The sheet music edition can be purchased in our store. You can also listen to the concert on YouTube.
Many thanks to everyone involved for an unforgettable evening full of musical delights.
