Concertgebouw Orchestra with Klaus Mäkelä performs works by Fanny Hensel

2024-01-15T15:41:01+01:0015. January 2024|Current Posts|

On December 20 and 21, 2023 at 8:15 pm, the work “Hero and Leander” by Fanny Hensel, née Mendelssohn, will be performed by the Concertgebouw Orchestra under the baton of Klaus Mäkelä at Het Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Sporanist Chen Reiss will interpret the “dramatic scene” “Hero and Leander” by Fanny Hensel, a composer whose music is now posthumously emerging from the shadow of her famous brother Felix Mendelssohn. In fact, this will be the first time that the Concertgebouw Orchestra has performed one of her works; attention for her opulent compositional style is therefore long overdue. “We wanted to create a composition with the works of Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn,” says Klaus Mäkelä.
Another concert date is on Friday, December 22 at 7 p.m. in the Kölner Philharmonie in Cologne.

Further information & tickets can be found on the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s website.

Ruth Schonthal 100th birthday 2024

2024-01-15T15:40:12+01:0015. January 2024|Current Posts, News|

We are delighted to be celebrating the 100th birthday of German-American composer Ruth Schonthal this year. Her life and career are characterized by extraordinary talent, overcoming adversity and artistic innovation.
Ruth Schonthal was born in Hamburg on June 24, 2924. She showed her extraordinary talent at the age of five and was celebrated as a child prodigy in Berlin in the 1930s. She began her musical education at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin, where she studied piano, music theory and composition until she was expelled by the National Socialists in 1935 at the age of nine due to her Jewish origins.
Her emigration initially took her to Stockholm, where she enrolled at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and published her first composition, the Sonatina for piano, in 1940. Due to the uncertain political situation, she emigrated with her family to Mexico in 1941. There she studied composition with Manuel María Ponce and achieved great success both as a composer and as a pianist. Her path eventually led her to New Haven, USA, where she studied with Paul Hindemith at Yale University from 1946 to 1948.

After graduating, Schonthal initially earned her living by composing advertising jingles and pop songs. As her success …

Happy Birthday Fanny!

2023-11-17T09:30:18+01:0017. November 2023|Current Posts|

Today we commemorate a remarkable woman in music history – Fanny Hensel, born on November 14. She was a 19th century German composer and pianist whose talent and influence were often overshadowed by her famous brother Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Fanny Hensel was born into a family in which music played an important role. With an incredible talent and passion for music, she began composing at an early age. Although social norms often denied women access to the professional music world, Fanny continued her artistic journey and created an impressive collection of piano pieces, songs and chamber music.

Fanny Hensel’s influence extends far beyond her time, and today her works are performed worldwide.

On Fanny Hensel’s birthday, we celebrate her pioneering spirit as a woman in the 19th century music world. Happy birthday, Fanny Hensel!

Byron Year 2024

2023-10-26T13:30:25+02:0026. October 2023|Current Posts|

2024 marks the 200th anniversary of the death of the famous English poet. Lord Byron, actually George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron, (born 22 January 1788 in London, England – died 19 April 1824 in Missolonghi, Greece), was a British Romantic poet and satirist whose poetry and personality captured the imagination of Europe.

Fanny Hensel set a total of three poems by George Gordon, Lord Byron (1788-1824). Reading his poems was part of Fanny Hensel’s programme for practising and expanding her English language skills. She completed the work There be none of beauty’s daughters on 29 December 1836. Two manuscripts have been preserved in the Mendelssohn Archive in Berlin. In 1837 Fanny Hensel set two more poems by Lord Byron to music, keeping to the original English text. They are the songs Farewell! and Bright be the Place of Thy Soul (composition date 1 June 1837).

Furore published the three songs in two editions: for high voice and for medium voice.

Diabelli recomposed — an international project of women composers

2023-10-10T09:12:40+02:002. August 2023|Current Posts|

200 years ago Anton Diabelli asked 50 composers to each write a variation on a waltz theme he had written – not a single women composer was among the composers. In 1924, the anthology entitled “50 Variations by the Most Excellent Composers and Virtuosos of Vienna” was published by the music publisher Cappi & Diabelli.
200 years later, on 05.11.2023, an extraordinary musical event will take place in the Staatstheater Braunschweig: The 50th premiere of waltz variations for solo piano on the same waltz theme by Diabelli. What makes this event particularly remarkable is that this time the variations are exclusively by 50 talented women composers from 22 different countries. The project was initiated by musicologist Claudia Bigos from Braunschweig and is under the patronage of General Director Dagmar Schlingmann.
For the performance 10 students from the piano class of Prof. Ewa Kupiec from the Hanover University of Music and Performing Arts (HMTMH) were selected. More infos
