Description

Lamentation
Eine Klangrose zum Gedenken an die Frauen in Ravensbrück
2003, rev. 2015 (14’20)
for string quartet
Duration: approx. 15′

Lamentation consists of three movements. The first movement features three emotional
themes of a lyrical (con espressione), tragic (con tristezza) and tempestuous (marcato) nature. The second movement (molto lento) is a quiet meditation that flows into the third movement without a break (attacca). The third movement begins
with a four-part chorale that is interrupted by the lyrical theme from the first movement.
The last part of this composition begins with a pizzicato solo by the first violin.
It alludes to a lonely, sad song, the chord sequence (played by viola and cello) of which is from Franz Schubert’s song Der Leiermann.
