The lyrics written by Gustav Droysen immediately following Felix’ departure at the end of March 1829, at once provided the impulse for the compositions. The songs are composed in a suggestive tonal language with an emphasis on simplicity. Allusions to works by her brother are woven into the fabric of the songs. Certainly Felix Mendelssohn was deeply moved by the songs that had been addressed to him.
