Description

Overture No. 3 in C major for orchestra (ca. 1850)

Instrumentation: 2.2.2.-2.2.3.0. timp. Str., additional offer: Clar. 1+2 in Bb, Trp. 1+2 in Bb

UA.: Berlin 7 June 1850, first publication

The work survives as an undated score with parts in autograph fair copy.

The genre of the overture had gained popularity in the first half of the 19th century and had established itself as an integral part of concert performance. In addition to the programmatic concert overture inspired by poetry, there was the form independent of program music. Mayer’s Overture in D minor (fue 2647) and Overture No. 3 in C major are compositions without programmatic character. The Faust Overture (fue 2646) is a literary-inspired work. Emilie Mayer chose the same formal sequence for all surviving compositions in this genre: an Allegro main section is preceded by a slow introduction.
Of the probably fifteen overtures composed by Mayer, only six have survived.
