The Romance op. 23 was composed for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, which devoted a portion of its show to women composers. The work was successful premiered on July 5, 1893 with the composer at the piano and the violinist Maud Powell, to whom the work is also dedicated. The composition is characterized by technical mastery, spontaneity, and originality and is very popular in the USA.
