Text: Gillian Turner

Inspired by the voices of wandering monks in the early Irish legends, the poem draws
on various locations in Ireland. Great Skellig Island in Co. Kerry is the location of a
remote monastery. It has connections with the present village of Ballinskelligs, Co.
Kerry, from where my fictional monk sets out on his journey.
Cill Rialaig – meaning Church of the Rules – is an artistic retreat village above Ballinskelligs,
and it is popularly believed that some of the monks may have lived in old
stone cottages in that location.
