Description

“… an extended, four-movement work in the tradition of the classical sonata influenced by Beethoven. The tonal language appears early Romantic, related to Weber, Marschner, Hummel, Löwe, for example, and some of it is somewhat reminiscent of early Mendelssohn. This is undoubtedly the work of a master who has mastered her craft.” (Üben und Musizieren)

New CD recording by Miriam Terragni and Catherine Sarasin!

The formally classic four-movement sonata has the sequence of movements: Agitato con passione – Adagio – Scherzo – Finale. It was written between 1860 and 1870. In December 1871, the influential Berlin music writer and composer Wilhelm Tappert published an essay in the Leipziger Musikalisches Wochenblatt entitled “The Women and the Musical Composition”. In it, he rated Emilie Mayer’s competence in dealing with the violin and the piano very highly: “…her precise knowledge of the instrument [she] once again sufficiently proved…” The sonata is energetic and at times demands equally virtuoso skills from the performers of both instruments.
