A theme with variations in an original minor melody, displaying modal and chromatic harmonies and prominent use of ostinati.
The title of this work comes from the wavelike motion
of the themes. It reflects the composers love
to the water and particularly the Australian beaches.
The work received its premier performance
in Australia in 1990.
The first movement of this work is a Theme and
Variations on the Adagio theme beginning in a D
minor tonality and ending in the E Dorian tonality.
The second movement is more animated and
makes use of syncopated ostinato figures and
floating melodic ideas. To unify the work, the second
movement work finishes with a varied repeat
of the E Dorian section from the first movement.
