Elizabeth Poston

This English composer, writer and pianist received her musical education at the RAM and on the Continent. She also studied the piano with Harold Samuel and the organ with Stanley Marchant. Later in her career she received support from Vaughan Williams. In 1925 she emerged as a composer when seven of her songs were published. Her first work to be broadcast from the BBC was an RAM prize-winning Violin Sonata. From 1930–1939 most of her time was spent abroad and among other studies she collected folksong. Poston distinguished herself in a wide field of musical activities. She produced many important scores for radio productions and outstanding film scores. Although her output was modest, Poston evolved a personal style which derived from the neo-classical tradition and laid great emphasis on clean craftsmanship and melodic fluency. She won particular respect as the editor of folksong, carol and hymn collections.
