This variation work “senza tema” was created for the Diabelli Project by pianist
Claudia Bigos. In 1819 Anton Diabelli invited contemporary composers to write
variations on his waltz theme. 50 composers responded to his call at that time. From
today’s perspective, this can be considered a successful PR campaign by the composer
and young publisher Diabelli.
Following on from this, 200 years later Claudia Bigos has been able to persuade more
than 50 female composers to deal with Anton Diabelli’s theme in a contemporary
and topical manner. In addition to a Furioso movement for the call, “Ricordi d’un
tema d’Antonio Diabelli” was created in parallel. The tender inspired me to search
for the Diabelli theme and the imaginary stations of its journey to me in 2022. I was
very pleased that this project offered me, as a concert guitarist and composer, a new
way of approaching the composer Anton Diabelli, so familiar to guitarists.
“Furioso” is also included in the complete edition “Diabelli Recomposed”, published
by Furore under the edition number fue 10413.
