Karola Obermüller is a composer in search of the unknown, with layer upon layer of enigmatic material buried deep beneath a surface that sounds sometimes sumptuous and at other times bristles with rhythmic energy: “hyperkinetic music” (NYT). Her unique compositional voice began to form when she was just a child making sound collages with tape recordings. Obermüller is a freelance composer and professor of composition at the University of New Mexico. She is also the recipient of the Darmstadt Music Award and the Heidelberg Female Artists’ Prize. The composer earned her PhD in composition at Harvard University following periods of study in Nuremberg and Saarbrücken and at the Mozarteum Salzburg. The first portrait CD of her music was released in November 2018 (WERGO/EZM) and her second album was released by New Focus Recordings (NYC) in 2023. www.karolaobermueller.net
