Pianist and composer Marina Baranova was born into a family of musicians in Ukraine. She was accepted into the music academy for gifted children in her hometown of Kharkiv when she was only five. She went on to win first prize at the National Competition in Ukraine at the age of eleven, after which she embarked on her first concert through Finland. In 2000, she moved to Germany to study at the Hanover University of Music. In each year of her studies at the university, Marina Baranova was awarded at least one international prize. In Joachim Kaiser’s review of the musician’s debut album of works by Robert Schumann, he writes: “Marina Baranova: an excellent Schumann interpreter!” In addition to classical performance practice, she is interested in crossover projects and composition. In 2013 she and percussionist Murat Coskun formed a duo which performed compositions of hers. “Hypersuites”, a collection of Baroque pieces (re)composed by Marina Baranova, was released in 2016 and chosen as “Album of the Month” by FORBES Magazine. This was followed in 2018 by “Unfolding Debussy”, which earned the composer three nominations for the Opus Klassik awards, including in the “Pianist of the Year” category. Another album, entitled “Atlas of Imaginary Places” and consisting of her own compositions, was released in 2021.
